About my mission

Ali's Menagerie was created in 2020 to help educate pet owners, and promote the highest standards of welfare for the hundreds of millions of exotic and domestic animal species in human care. Looking after animals, especially our own pets, is an incredibly rewarding activity, and many of us have welcomed animals into our lives. This being said, there is also a responsibility with each of us to ensure we do our very best for any animal in our care, be they covered in fur, feathers, or scales. At times this isn't always easy, increasingly so for keepers of exotic species, where misunderstanding and misinformation are rife. That is why this site was created.

I hope to:

  • Educate the public on their legal obligations to provide animals with a good standard of care
  • Inspire the public to not only meet the legal requirements, but to exceed these through providing the very best care
  • Reduce the level of misinformation surrounding the needs of certain species, with evidence
  • Increase the positive association the public have with animals, in particular the exotic pet and zoo industries
  • Highlight and champion evidence-based husbandry, and the use of science to provide animals with naturalistic, stimulating lives
  • Promote the importance of holding animals in private and public collections for education and conservation benefit
  • Create content which not only informs but also entertains

To do this I will:

  • Produce high-quality, accurate content for this site and social media to portray best practice
  • Ensure that all the information published is checked for factual correctness from a variety of reputable sources
  • Regularly review and (where required) update content in line with changes in legislation and scientific advancement
  • Continue to allow easy, free access to this site and its content
  • Collaborate with respected individuals and organisations in both the pet and zoo sectors to provide the best information
